Languages & Mental Fitness

Learning languages are known to be very good for the mind. It keeps your mind active, healthy and helps stave off diseases of the mind like Alzheimer.

However, what is less known is that if your brain is not used to learning languages, it can get tired pretty quickly. It’s a bit like going to the gym. When you first start going to the gym, you can only cope with a minute or two on the running machine. Then you have to stop and rest.

If you keep up your visits to the gym, something happens. Your body starts to get used to the exercise and you suddenly find you can cope with longer and longer periods on the running machine. This is because you are conditioning your body to be more fit and healthy.

This is exactly the same for the mind. So if you brain starts telling you that it is tired and needs a break after you have done some language study or if you are no longer taking anything in, maybe you should take a break. Go to sleep even. This will allow your mind to absorb all your new language information, for your mind to recover and become even better at learning at the same time.

Once you have conditioned your mind to be more fit and healthy, you are likely to be able to cope with lots of language study and a lot less resting.
