Have you tried LR?

LR is a technique of listening to an audio book and reading the same book at the same time (LR).  Personally, I prefer to read a book first to look up all the words I don’t know in a dictionary and then consolidate all these new words when I do LR.  But other people prefer the approach of going straight into LR and if there is a word that keeps popping up or is really hindering understanding, then go and look it up in the dictionary.

Whatever your approach to LR, it is a fantastic technique for improving all the skills of listening, reading and vocabulary building.  Not only is it a fantastic way to improve these skills but it is hugely enjoyable too.  You can sit down and relax after a hard day at work for 30 minutes or so of LR with a refreshing beverage. What an awesome way to learn a language!  Alternatively, do you have a commute on a train or a bus with nothing else to do but stare out of the window?  This would be a perfect opportunity to do some LR.

There are heaps of resources to do LR in the English language too.  For example, the whole Harry Potter series come in paperback and audio form so you could commence LR to the whole Harry Potter series with the great Stephen Fry narrating.  He has a lovely British educated accent.

There are many other books with audio available in English too. You only need to do a search on amazon.com or amazon.co.uk to find a huge range of materials.

LR is known to be a very powerful technique for learning a language.  The more time you can put into this technique, the greater the results.  This is with the added bonus that it is fun too!
